Australian Senior Sides Concludes

by Pieter Harris on October 11, 2023

The Australian Senior Sides Championships wrapped up today at the Joondalup Bowling Club.

Both the Women and the Men went into the final round with a chance to finish second on their respective ladders. Unfortunately, it was not to be, try as they might neither side was able to get a win over the Victorian side.

The WA Women went into the last round needing to win on all 3 rinks to overtake Victoria for second position on the ladder. At the end of the game only the Noelene Abe, Irene Leahy, Jill Adam, and Lee Poletti rink was able to come away with a win 19-16 with the Aggregate going Victoria’s way 54-67.

The loss meant our ladies finished 4th on the ladder, while Victoria took out the championships with New South Wales faltering with a final-round loss to South Australia. The rink of Noelene Abe, Irene Leahy, Jill Adam, and Lee Poletti finished the Championships as WA’s leading rink with 5 wins and 2 losses.

The WA Men needed a last-round win as well as a couple of results to go their way to go to second position on the ladder. The boys fought hard all game and were only three shots down with one end to play. Unfortunately, although they won on two rinks, they could not get those shots to overhaul Victoria and went down 59-66.

The loss kept WA in 4th position on the ladder, while Victoria stayed in second with Queensland taking the title with 6 wins and a draw, with the draw coming against WA. Both the John Goddard and Brad King rinks had 4 wins each to finish level on the rinks ladder. The rink of John Goddard, Gary Caffell, Kevin Pickering, and Steve Cerff just had their noses in front with plus 18 shots.

Congratulations to both WA teams, the Ladies were in it the whole tournament and could quite easily have won a medal while the men fought their way up the ladder and gave themselves a chance to finish second after losing both games on day 1.

Thank you to the Joondalup Bowling Club and all the volunteers for their efforts, we will see you again next week for the Australian Championships.

There is no official play on Thursday, the Australian Sides Practice Day begins at Sorrento before officially kicking off on Friday.
