2024 All Abilities State Championships

by Denise McMillan on April 14, 2024

Saturday was the first day of the 2024 All Abilities State Championships where our players who are deaf, have an Intellectual or Physical Disability, or Vision Impairment play against their peers in Singles and Pairs.

Saturdays games included Physical Singles, Deaf Pairs, and Combination Pairs where the Vision Impaired and the Intellectual Disabilities play off against themselves and each other.

Each game ran for 1 hour or 18 up for Singles and 10 ends for Pairs. The physical singles ran over 7 games for the two players who made it to the sticky end of Finals – established player Eddie Gollan faced off against newbie Adam Eksanow from Nungarin in a nail biting final; however, Eddie came out ahead 14 to 10 to be the Singles Champion for the second year running. Adam has a bright future in Para Bowls in WA!

In our Combination Pairs we had vision impaired players Calvin Rodgers and Sharon Werndley play off against intellectual players Julie Srhoy and Paul Hynd with Calvin and Sharon coming our the winners after a close game of 8 to 5.

In the Deaf Pairs two team combos of a Cockburn player and Lake Monger player faced off with Andrew McLean (Lake Monger) and Peter Johnston (Cockburn) playing against Gavin Powell (Lake Monger) and George Ravlich (Cockburn – more affectionately known as Johnny) with Andrew and Peter coming out the winners 13 to 7.

On Sunday the players switch over to Singles for the Deaf, Intellectual and Vision Impaired players while the Physical disability players play pairs. More updates to come later today and Tuesday there will be a photo album to share as well.
