Junior stars claim #AusOpenGC titles
In a game that was fit for television, two of the finest young male prodigies went head to head in the final of the 2015 Australian Open Junior Boys Singles in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Wynnum Manly’s Jacob Nelson got off to the dream start against Australian Junior representative Jono Davis, jumping away to a very important four nil lead.
Nelson won eight of the first nine ends to lead 13-2 and despite only winning four of the remaining 13 ends, Nelson’s full count of four on the 18th end was detrimental for the Dubbo sensation who at that stage was creeping his way back into match.
This is Nelson’s biggest win of his career and a wonderful achievement to have defeated such a quality player in the final.
“It feels pretty good, I can’t really describe how I feel, I’m pumped and overjoyed,” a delighted Nelson said after his presentation.
The 16 year old says he will be back next year to defend his title and whilst he is happy with his $2,000 cheque, he has endeavours to progress further in the men’s competition next year and has his eyes on a bigger prize.
“The Australian Open has been awesome; I’ve really enjoyed it and a big thank-you to my dad for supporting me this week.”
It was a one-sided affair in the girl’s final with Sophie Young making it a double for Queensland after defeating ACT’s Jessica Hogan 21-5.
Both girls deserving finalist battled it out at Broadbeach Bowling Club in front of hundreds of spectators who remained after the conclusion of the coveted men’s singles match.
Young, a 15 year old rising star from Capalaba and a Queensland junior singles representative was in stellar form right from the first end, never allowing Hogan to get into any rhythm.
Young had to fight hard to make the final with a close encounter against Raymond Terrace’s Molly Wilton and the top level bowls doesn’t stop here; Young will represent Queensland at next week’s QLD v NSW test series at Taren Point.
In the BWD Multi-Disability Championships there is one final left to be played tonight between Josh Thornton and James Reynolds versus Nathan Appleton and Josh Barry.
Thornton and Reynolds defeated McGarry and Currie 17-6, whilst Appleton and Barry defeated Nicholls and Bonnell 23-7 in this afternoon’s semi-finals.
This pair’s final will conclude what has been an amazing event for the athletes with disabilities with plenty of medals and prize money already being handed out during the day.
