Round 2 in Review

by admin on November 1, 2015

BCiB Saturday Pennants After the excitement of round one comes the more settled round two. Now most players have had at least one game with their team mates and have some idea of where they might be at this season. New players now know what pennants is like, settling the butterflies. As always in bowls there are one or two tales to come from the weekend.
This week’s largest aggregate and rink wins both came from the Warnbro 5th division side. The Wizards recorded a very impressive 90 shot victory made even more extraordinary by the fact that 5th division has only three rinks. The size of the win is predominantly down to the rink skippered by Kim Aldridge who contributed over half the score. In their 64-7 win they earned two 8 badges and went well past 50. Unfortunately their opponents were disadvantaged by being a player short however we aren’t sure how much that detracts from a 57 shot win.
The floggings continued in 4th division gold where three of the four games were decided by more than sixty shots. Margins of 70, 65, 61 and 2 ensured that it was the least close colour of the round.
In Contrast both 3rd division white and 4th division red had larger rink wins than the biggest aggregate wins. In 3rd white the Laviona rink from Gosnells had a 20 shot win, 2 shots higher than Safety Bay’s 18 shot victory, and in 4th red Glenn Forrest’s 16 shot margin was well beaten by Armadale’s Barr led rink who romped home by 29 shots on their own.
Speaking of close, three draws were recorded this week including two in the same colour. In 3rd gold both the Stirling vs Scarborough and Sorrento vs Nollamara games were all square at the end of 84 ends. The Dalkeith-Nedlands women’s 3rd division side had the closest win of the week with one rink drawing and the other winning by a single shot against Mosman Park.
Innaloo had to adapt on the fly when they found themselves in an unusual situation on Saturday. Midway through mowing a grass green in preparation for a women’s second division game that afternoon the mower packed up and stopped working, leaving part of the green un-mowed. Thankfully the mowing was almost done and enough of the green had been cut for the two rinks of ladies to play however the club had to change the direction of game from north-south to east west to avoid the uncut grass. This meant that the rink markers and scoreboards had to be moved and the lines marked hurriedly before the start of the game.
