Edition 4 Season defining wins

With divisions now taking shape for most of the competition we can now take a look at some results which could be very meaningful in the long run. The sort of wins that turn your season around, save you from relegation or get you that top spot so you can get promoted and play for the pennant. From now on we’ll be focusing on unexpected results or matches that could be crucial to the make up of the final ladder. We’ll also have an update on the first couple of divisions every so often and a couple of specials at certain times of the year.
On Tuesday we saw two massive upsets that could see two clubs get their seasons back on track. First on the ladder was beaten by last not once but twice this week. The first instance of this came in 2nd Blue where Cambridge defeated the previously unbeaten Joondalup. Cambridge remain bottom have dragged themselves to within 2.5 points of safety and are now just five points from fifth. Conversely Joondalup have lost their top spot to the undefeated Warwick and have now dropped points that not many of their fellow contenders are likely to. The second case comes from 3rd Red where Hilton Park took all six points against Gosnells away from home. They’ve now rocketed into fifth spot only six points behind Gosnells in second and now have a foundation to pull well clear of the bottom.
Men’s 3rd Gold had a crucial round on Saturday with the bottom four teams playing each other. An 11 point gap had already opened up between sixth and seventh so this round’s results could be critical in deciding who survives and who plays 4th Division next year. The two higher ranked sides emerged victorious with Wanneroo (seventh) defeating Cambridge (ninth) and Morley (eight) beating Osborne Park (tenth). Morley and Wanneroo now have a game buffer from the drop zone but are still eight points from sixth and a more comfortable position.
Osborne Park had a few nervy moments with another two of its sides in key games against demotion rivals. Overall they had a 1-2 record in those games including the previously mentioned loss in 3rd Division. Their other loss came in 1st Blue North where they dropped crucial home points to Swan. They now face a 12 point gap to get into a playoff. News was better in 1st White where they picked up the points way at Kalamunda which could be crucial if they are to avoid the drop. With the Premier League back in finals contention as well there’s likely to be some very big games of bowls played at Osborne Park this season.
Finally we leave with a story of one rink. Under the Friday night lights at Kardinya Doubleview’s undefeated rink of Ryan Moyle, Kyle McIlroy, Addy Wetzler and Brad White held their opponents scoreless at home for the first 15 ends to have a 29-0 lead. The end result of 33-4 ensured Doubleview were never troubled and maintain their second place on the ladder.
