Around the Greens

Edition 6 Pennants hots up It was a hot week of bowls with many no doubt looking forward to the rest provided by the Christmas break. It’s heating up in most of our divisions now too. With almost a full set of fixtures played most will now know if they are candidates for promotion, demotion, neither or both.
Maybe all except Men’s 2nd Red on Saturday which had a bit of a shakeup after three genuine upsets and a key 50/50. Kardinya jumped out of the demotion places, swapping with eight placed Cockburn having beaten them last week. They’ll need to work hard to stay though. Cockburn are still only two points behind and Leeming are only three points back over an upset win over finals contenders East Freo. Leeming could be forgiven for feeling unlucky to be on the bottom with 21.5 points, the tally would have them seventh in any other 2nd Division. East Freo’s loss sees them slip to fifth leap frogged by Hilton Park who defeated top two challenger Dalkeith Nedlands. Seventh placed Safety Bay have themselves back in contention after dethroning formerly top placed Willeton who now fall to second. The division is delicately poised with four and a half points separating first and third and one and half separating fourth and seventh. With the top five all involved in some level of post season action all games will be crucial.
Another division to see a radical shift in circumstances is women’s 2nd Green. Following Innaloo’s win over Stirling the top two have opened up a 10 point lead on the rest of the competition. Since the gap is now over three aggregates its hard to see both teams losing enough games in the new year to give anybody else a look at top spot and promotion.
We don’t often talk about margins anymore but we have to talk about Men’s 4th Gold where there were two staggering margins. North Beach beat Midland-Morrison by a massive 89 shots to show why they are top of the ladder. Mid-table Joondalup have launched themselves into finals contention after a resounding 68 shot win over Innaloo. Things are beginning to look dark for the bottom two clubs with a 13.5 gap between 8th and 9th, coincidentally the total the two sides have acquired between them.
We have been sent in an unusual occurrence from Men’s Thursday pennants which we don’t normally cover. Fremantle’s trip to Warnbro in 2nd Red saw a game were every rink finished with the same score. Two Warnbro rinks were 21-18 winners whereas Freo claimed a point from there own 21-18 winner. A reminder that individuals or clubs are welcome to submit any interesting results or happenings from any inter-club competition to enquiries@bowlswa.com.au.
