Edition 7 The half way point Now we’re at the halfway point of the season we can take a look at who have been the best sides over the first set of fixtures. Some sides have enjoyed extremely impressive starts and are unbeaten so far. It’s a tie for the most points in men’s pennants. Both Cambridge in 2nd Gold and North Beach in 4th Gold have collected 63 of a possible 72 points in the first half of the season. Cambridge have had an unbeaten start to their campaign as they seek promotion back into 1st Blue, including a round nine win against the previously unbeaten Sorrento. North Beach have actually lost an aggregate but have only lost five rinks for the season so far with their four main skippers only having lost one game apiece. The best of the three rinkers is Kalamunda in 5th White who have racked up 49 out of a potential 54 points. The Cougars have won all nine aggregates and have only lost five rinks. An extrapolation shows they have amassed the equivalent of 65 points in a four rink competition. The best performed women’s team so far has been Scarborough 2 in 2nd Gold. They’ve picked up 46 points from their opening nine games. They have lost an aggregate but have lost just five rinks and have three of the top four skippers in the division.
Women’s pennants can lay claim to have the tightest division in Perth metropolitan pennants. In 3rd Red the gap between top and bottom is only 15.5 points, the lowest of any division. Four teams are within 5.5 points of top spot and promotion while some of those could find themselves back fighting to stay in the division if they don’t start the new year well. In contrast the most spread out division is the previously mentioned men’s 4th Gold where North Beach’s 63 point haul is 55 points more than bottom of the ladder.
One division really tightening up is men’s 4th Blue where both teams in the bottom two places beat more fancied opponents from the top half of the competition. Victories to Nollamara and Yokine mean just eight points separates finals places from demotion places. Speaking of Nollamara and Yokine bottom placed Nollamara beat top of the ladder Yokine in men’s 2nd Blue to pull off the upset of the round and move off the bottom of the ladder.

And finally a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all bowlers out there. If you aren’t bowling enjoy the break and come back all guns blazing in 2018.
