Around the Greens with the Rinkside Spy

Welcome to the second edition of Around the Greens where we are going to have a look at the teams that have gotten off to the best possible start after two rounds – yet to concede a point to the opposition.

Men’s Saturday

Mosman Park already in 1st White already looked poised to take the next step to premier league wrapping up another 8-0 win last weekend. Full of talented players they have four good skips in Hoffman, Wishart, McKenna and Walker, it will be a surprise to see them challenged this year.

South Perth have really benefitted by some good recruiting in the off season which is highlighted by the fact their top two sides are currently unbeaten. Their 1st Blue North team impressive with two maximums this year with skips Durrant, Bandy, Roelofs and Santostefano giving the Millers plenty of fire power.

Sorrento is other club with plenty of depth and their 2nd Blue team has scored the maximum 16pts so far this year in two good wins. Along with second placed Bedford 15pts they look like dominating the division and amazingly both sides have a percentage over 200% having more than doubled their opposition for the year thus far.

In 4th division Willetton are looking impressive as another unbeaten team. Skip Carl Gavlik with his team of Lance Pickersgill, Ron Bayens and Alan Carter already with a plus 51 shot margin after just two matches. The bulk of that coming courtesy of a massive 45-9 win last week.

In 5th division there are two teams on the maximum 12pts for the year. Mt Lawley in 5th Blue and Forrestfield in 5th White. 6th Division competition will kick off this weekend.

Women’s Tuesday

Like the Men just a handful of teams have made the perfect start this season.

In 1st White Melville are looking good to return to Premier League, in a  grade where for the majority of clubs they are fielding their next 12 best players Melville have had good wins against Leeming and North Beach already.

Likewise Warwick look like another club on the rise in the Women’s grade. Their no 1 team picking up maximum points on both occasions this year defeating Wanneroo and Mundaring.

The other unbeaten Ladies teams are in 3rd division. Pickering Brook is only a small club but packing a big punch with two impressive wins in 3rd White. However we have saved arguably the best for last with the Merriwa AFA 3rdBlue team. The last of the unbeaten sides they have an impressive 99 shots up across their three rinks. The most impressive of them being the rink of Maggie Edgar, Joy Gillian, Barbara Wilkins and Gayle Harding with a superb +68 shots up. Yesterday’s win was a real bumper 49-4 victory.

Ladies 4th Division kicks off next week.

Country Pennants

With nearly all country pennant leagues off and running we will start with a quick look at the South Eastern Bowling League.

Already four rounds in and Narembeen Gold sit unbeaten on top with 27 pts just ahead of Merredin Civic Gold (23.5), Narembeen Maroon (22) and Corrigin Gold (22),.

But getting a special mention is the 6th placed Corrigin Blue side who had a massive 83 shot win against Bruce Rock Gold last week, the main contributor was B Alps rink of S McMiles, G Downing and D Davies who had a 48 to 9 victory over I Dolton’s rink.

The Women’s competition is a real tight affair. After 5 rounds amazingly the top team has only 3 wins and only 3.5pts separate the top 7 of 8 sides. At the moment Narembeen lead the way with 12.5pts but anything can happen with Tammin 12, Bruce Rock 11.5, Corrigin Gold 11, Corrigin Blue 11, Civic Gold 9 and Civic Blue 9 all in the picture.
