Around the Greens with the Rinkside Spy

Welcome back to another edition of Around the Greens. After looking at pennant sides that had perfect starts last week we’re going to look at skippers that are off to a flyer. There are a whole bunch of skippers across the pennant competitions so we’ll be looking at just the top of the top so far as well as some general news from out and about.

Men’s Saturday

Before we get into the skipper tables we have to mention a 50 badge that was scored on the weekend. Michael Ryan, Roger Bows, Neil Cole and Donald Oliver won their match 53 to 13 on the Saturday, helping secure a big victory for Valley in 2nd Division Blue. Their score was equal to their opponents aggregate score as the side picked up all eight points and won 134-53 overall in a dominant display. Speaking of dominant performances in 2nd Blue, Bedford’s John Carlsen had a big 42-16 which has lifted his record to the best in Men’s metro pennants. He and his rink are a perfect three from three so far and have a combined margin of 62 shots. They’re part of a side that has only lost two rinks so far this season and sit second on the ladder as they seek an immediate turn to 1st Division. Bayswater’s Colin Walmsley heads the chasing pack with his 3rd Blue rink enjoying a perfect start with 52 shots up.

Women’s Tuesday

In the Women’s Tuesday competition Merriwa’s Maggie Edgar has had the best start to the season of any skipper from the major pennant competitions. Currently her 3rd Blue rink are cruising with three wins and a mighty 74 shots up from their opening three encounters. They won their first game by 23 shots and their second by an amazing 45, only one shot away from a 50 badge. Merriwa have made a good start overall as well and sit second on the ladder. Maureen Cooney is next on the list, 60 shots to the good for Thornlie. Unusually this has been pulled off in 1st White where big wins tend to be a bit less frequent. Another doing well in a high division is Helen Stevens who is +54 in Premier League, equal with Wanneroo’s Maureen Jennings (2 Green) for the next spot.

Country

We’ve had some eight badges ordered from the office and the lucky recipients come from the country. Denison Blue’s Dianne Reudavey, Lorraine Crowden, Patricia Robins and Ann Doy picked up a full house on the fourth end of their pennant match against Northampton last Thursday, congratulations ladies.

It’s hard to judge with different start dates but the skipper with the best start to the year in women’s country pennants is probably Busselton’s Judith Rice. Rice has won all four of her games for +68 shots in a great start. Of course if you’d rather have more wins on the board you’d be looking at Northam’s Jennifer Treasure and Denison’s Marie Eaton who have both won their opening six games. Treasure has the slightly better shot up with 57 to Eaton’s 45. On the Men’s side of things Brad King from Geraldton is on an unbeaten seven game run to start the season. Obviously the shots are going to add up over that time and King is currently +81. A couple of other skippers are above 80 shots up. Goomalling’s Chris Schell is 88 to the good after five wins from five and Kukerin’s Ross Ditchburn is +85 with the same five wins from five games.

If you have any records, fantastic performances or good stories that other people would like to read about please send them through to enquires@bowlswa.com.au. Who knows? We might see your name or your club in our article next week.
