Over 70’s Carnival a success

by Aaron Delaporte on November 24, 2020

The inaugural Over 70’s Men’s Triples Carnival was held at the Fremantle Bowling Club on Monday Nov 16th. This was the first major event at the fantastic new club house facility and sand-filled synthetic green. 26 teams entered which was a good response. The event had a limit of 28 teams as only two greens were available, being one synthetic and one grass. Another grass green was unavailable due to still coming back from a renovation.

The format was triples, with 3 games of 13 ends, with a random draw. The draw ensured each team played at least one game on both the grass and synthetic green. The scoring format was the standard points for games won, plus shots up in case of draws.

Fremantle were able to offer a prize pool of $2000 thanks to generous support from our sponsor Metwest Steel.  Prize money was paid out to teams that finished 1st to 4th, plus round winners for the 3 rounds. Place getters were:

1st :  J Andrews, G Hogg, A Booth
2nd: G Archell, P Freund, N Staude
3rd: G Duffield, M Basten, B O’Brien
4th: B Jeppesen, P Gatti, R Pears

Apart from prize money, there were great raffle prizes available, including the now famous Fremantle Mega Seafood raffle with 2 jumbo lobsters, 8 ‘normal’ lobsters, and 3kg box of prawns. There were also novelty prizes for the ‘oldest old fart’ and ‘youngest old fart’.

Once again, the Fremantle Bowling Club volunteers came to the fore, and many thanks go to them for helping with raffles and lunch preparation.

Given the positive feedback from players and the success of this inaugural Over 70’s carnival, Fremantle feel encouraged to make this an annual event.
