2022 Multibowl – It’s Bowls Time!
DAY 6 WA UPDATE: Today is the final day of the 2022 Multi-Disability Nationals (also known as the Multibowl) – it seemed to be both a long and short event! While WA was not in any of the semi-finals they have had a fantastic week. Entering the competition with five new players learning the ropes and playing three games a day over 5 days left even the most energetic player tired. We look forward to further strengthening the WA side in the future.
The Picture taking has stopped with the day 5 album – I hope you enjoyed the photo’s taken by Denise McMillan – it was a pleasure to provide such a varied array of states and players! Until next year’s event we hope you enjoy your bowls!

DAY 5 WA UPDATE: WA had two quarter finals, one with the triples team of Steve Murray/Wayne Allsopp/Diana Nixon winning their section against two Tasmanian teams and another Western Australian team. The quarter finals did not go their way losing to Victoria 8 to 21.
The other quarter final game was Michael ‘Mick’ Garrett who took on New South Whales and Tasmania to win his section. The quarter finals proved to be too tricky and he too lost to David Minns from Tasmania.

DAY 4 WA UPDATE: WA did not have games in round 1 and 2 of Monday; however, the men’s B7/8 singles started in the 3rd round bringing mixed results. Some close games were not reflected in the scores with Wayne Allsopp, Clem Nottle, and David Stephen going down by small margins and played mostly to the time limit of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Mick Garrett, Eddie Gollan, and Steve Murray all pulled out wins – being in sections of three, this means they will have a BYE tomorrow morning and play their second (and final sectional play) game at noon. Players all have grins on their faces as well as exhaustion for some! Tomorrows last game of day 5 will consist of the men’s B7/8 Quarter Final while the women continue their sectional games of pairs playing three games tomorrow.

DAY 3 WA UPDATE: Are women’s singles games started with very close losses across the board in the first round and then total wins in the second round with Diana Nixon winning 18 to 14, Maud Taylor winning 21 to 15, and Jodie Nikolic winning 21 to 8. The third game of the day the players level of tiredness was showing with the women going down. So, no semi-finals for our ladies – but an excellent level of representation from our WA ladies!
While the women were contesting the B7/8 singles event our men partnered up to participate in the B7/8 pairs. WA was not fortunate in the pairs with only one win during the three-game day by Eddie Gollan and Clem Nottle against TAS 22 to 8. We will be looking to improve our performance tomorrow with the men all participating in the B7/8 singles while the ladies take a well deserved break for the day.

DAY 2 WA UPDATE: WA played well but could not overcome the VIC side of Thorton/Barry/Protopapas. Tomorrow is the start of Men’s Pairs and Women’s Singles – more updates to come then!

DAY 1 WA UPDATE: WA started strong on the first day of Open Triples with all three teams winning. Michael Garrett/David Stephen/Maud Taylor initiated the day with a draw against Tasmania, followed by defeat from the next Tasmanian team and rounding out the day with another defeat (but definitely fun) by their team mates WA Steve Murray/Wayne Allsopp/Diana Nixon.
The team skipped by Murray also won their first two games against two Tasmanian teams to win their way – through to the Quarter Finals being held today.
The team of Eddie Gollan/Clem Nottle/Jodie Nikolic won their first game and then went went down to Queensland and a narrow defeat from ACT. All of the WA players are now at Club Mermaid supporting the WA team playing in the Quarter Finals on day two of the 2022 Multibowl.
The 2022 Multibowl, the national event show casing physical disability bowls – also known as para-bowls, is underway at Club Mermaid on the Gold Coast.
Six States and one Territory start event play with Open Triples and then continue the event with gender specific Singles and Pairs in B5/6 and B7/8 classifications.
What does a classification mean? Under the auspice of International Bowlers with a Disability (IBD) players go through a medical and technical classification process that allows players of equal balance and ability to play each other on the green – even though they have quite varied disabilities.
IBD bowlers compete at National level at the Multibowl and then have a chance to play at International Level at the Common Wealth Games and IBD specific events. There is a hope that bowls may be introduced to the Olympics which would then open up a pathway via the Special Olympics.
States and Territories are allowed a team of ten para-players that include six men and four women. Western Australia wasn’t able to field a complete side falling one player short with six men and three women:
Five new players from Pingelly (Michael Garrett & Clem Nottle), Yanchep (Jodie Nikolic), Kardinya (Diana Nixon), and Morley (David Stephen) combine with prior event players Wayne Allsopp (Dowerin), Eddie Gollan (Thornlie), Steven Murray (Scarborough), and Maud Taylor (Eaton).
