“Perth will host two editions of bowls’ showpiece ‘state versus state/territory’ national competition, the Nationals, in 2023 and 2026.

The Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA, have secured the two-week long event which incorporates six of the sport’s most revered competitions and 31 national titles as part of a newly signed two-year agreement.

Staged from October 6 to 20 next year, and again in October 2026, the Nationals will again feature all ages and abilities, spanning junior, open-age, senior, para and able-bodied events, to be held across three or more clubs located in the city, announced at a later date.

More than 1,000 interstate visitors are expected to descend on Perth for the festival of bowls, which includes the Australian Multi-Disability Championships, Australian Champion of Champions, Australian Under-18 Championships, Australian Senior Sides Championships, Australian Sides Championships and the Australian Championships.

Western Australian Tourism Minister Roger Cook said the Nationals will attract Australia’s best bowlers to compete and positively impact the economy.

“Securing a two-year agreement with Bowls Australia to host the Nationals in Perth is a big win for Western Australia as it will bring top-class lawn bowls competitors to our state to showcase their skills as they compete in a range of competitions, which will deliver significant benefits to WA’s tourism and hospitality sectors,” Cook said.

“Attracting mass participation sporting events to Western Australia is a key priority of the State Government and Tourism WA as these events are a key driver in bringing more interstate visitors to WA.

“The Nationals will also have a positive impact on local lawn bowls clubs and programs, ensuring the sport continues to gain popularity in WA.”

Bowls Australia CEO Matthew Kennedy said the announcement was a coup for both the sport and the city.

“Perth is a natural fit to host one of the sport’s pre-eminent competitions, in the Nationals, and Bowls Australia are delighted that thousands of competitors and event spectators will experience this wonderful destination in both 2023 and 2026,” Kennedy said.

“On behalf of Bowls Australia and the thousands of bowlers who will experience the Nationals in Perth, I wish to convey our thanks to the WA Government and Tourism WA for their ongoing support of this revered competition.

“The staging of these events in Perth will showcase the strength of bowls in the west and complement the great work and achievements of Bowls WA, while continuing to raise the profile of the sport in the region and ensure a lasting legacy resulting from marquee competition.” “
