Krstic and Butler set to do battle…against each other!

by Clive Adams on June 17, 2023

Singles action took centre stage across on the second Saturday of the 2023 Australian Open on the Gold Coast today. With some of our hopefuls unfortunately defeated, WA still has 5 players in contention for the Singles titles.

In the Women’s event, WA has two players remaining. Kristina Krstic won all three matches today, the second of which was a tight encounter with former Perth Sun Dawn Hayman – Krstic won 21-20. Incredibly, in the round of 16 match tomorrow morning, Krstic meets Manning clubmate and great friend Laura Butler who recorded a very impressive 21-8 win over Bolivia Millerick in her final match today.

The winner of the match between Krstic and Butler then faces the winner of Natasha Van Eldik and Chloe Stewart – certainly a very tough pathway to the finals.

In the Men’s event, Jeremy Thomas of Guilderton continued his great run, advancing to tomorrow’s round of 64, but things do get harder as he meets New Zealand International and BPL star, Ali Forsyth, first up tomorrow morning.

Osborne Park players had a mixed day with Cody Packer eliminated in today’s final round, however Jack East booked a spot against Queenslander Kobe Barton in tomorrow’s last 64 matchups.  John Goddard also earned his place with a super impressive display to eliminate Sean Baker 21-20.

Knockout rounds for both Men’s and Women’s Singles continue tomorrow

Yanchep’s Jodie Nikolic commences her campaign in the Women’s Multi-Disability Singles tomorrow, however it is a tough section in which she finds herself, with Commonwealth Games medalist Serena Bonnell to get past to progress.
