Butler claims her place in the Australian Open Singles semi-finals

by Clive Adams on June 18, 2023

Laura Butler has claimed a place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Singles at the 2023 Australian Open following a fantastic display on the Gold Coast.

Butler’s first victim of the day was WA’s own Kristina Krstic – a nailbiter of a win 21-20, however finding herself in perhaps the most difficult part of the draw, Butler wasn’t done there. A super display to defeat Chloe Stewart 21-16, now presents one of the greatest opportunities Butler has had in the sport.

Butler will meet Australian Jackaroo Kelsey Cottrell in the semi-final on Wednesday.

The news wasn’t so great for WA’s men’s singles combatants with the remaining all eliminated – John Goddard progressing the furthest but falling to Corey Wedlock in the last 32.

In the Vision Impaired Singles, Serge Ansquer from Frankland River has advanced to the semi-finals of his event with three great wins, while Jodie Nikolic bowed out in the Multi-Disability Women’s Singles, despite a positive showing.

Multi-Disability events start tomorrow…

Attention turns back to the Men’s Pairs and Women’s Fours in the open competitions tomorrow, with 10 WA linked Men’s Pairs teams still going, and seven WA linked Women’s Fours combinations.

Blake Nairn with Jarryd Davies (VIC) looks a combination capable of going deep into the event, as do Ryan Moyle and Brad White, Blake Butler and Scott O’Brien, and evergreen Bruce Eagles with Matt Sharrett

Cameron Green and Paul Sinden were impressive in their section rounds, and we also have Steve Novak with Matt Allen, Simon Alden with Matthew Ngui, and Shane Rixom and Sean Niven who are capable of doing damage. Finally, two mixed State combinations of Jeremy Thomas and Gareth Hill, as well as Glenn Martin joining Will Ainger rounds out the WA combinations.

The Women’s Fours are predominantly led by Kristina Krstic’s dynamite crew of Ellen Ryan, Ellen Falkner and Brianna Smith, although Laura Butler, with Chloe Stewart, Katelyn Inch and Olivia Cartwright actually took bigger margins from their sectional rounds.

WA skippered combinations include Lisa Featherby, Maggie Newton, Anne Crabb and Irene Arndt as they look to move closer to Australian Open Glory. Anne Sauerwein from Sorrento also remains, alongside three non-WA players.

A host of WA competitors also feature in the Over 60’s Men’s Pairs, as well as the Multi-Disability Pairs and Vision Impaired Pairs. We will watch all results with interest.
