Fours push for finals at the AO

by Clive Adams on June 19, 2023

WA’s run at the 2023 Australian Open Men’s Pairs title ended today, with the final remaining WA linked pairing of Blake Nairn and Jarryd Davies bowing out in the last match of the day.  The very talented pairing of Sean Ingham and Sean Baker simply proved too much for them.

There was better news in the Women’s Fours however, with Kristina Krstic’s crew of Ellen Ryan, Ellen Falkner and Brianna Smith advancing in fine style, and Laura Butler continuing her fine Australian Open campaign alongside teammates Chloe Stewart, Katelyn Inch and Olivia Cartwright.

Anne Crabb, with Sharon Lyster and Joanne Watson, all from WA, and Jenny Clarke (NSW) also advanced making it three WA linked teams in the last 16 – still plenty to hope for there.

The Men’s Over 60s Pairs commenced, and whilst there is still a number of sections to play tomorrow, some WA teams have already stamped their passport into the knockout rounds.

Quinns Rocks’ duo Steve O’Neil and Shane Smith are through despite a loss in their last game.  Jamie Newton and Ross Warburton are comfortably through, and Cockburn’s Hal Chambers, combining with Victorian relative Robin Chambers, also made his way through.

Dunsborough’s John Mawson and Geoff Benn advanced in great fashion despite a close one in the first, and Bayswater’s Ray Van Ross is through alongside teammate Michael Byrom from Queensland.

With second chance qualifiers not known until the end of tomorrow’s play Jim Newton and Peter Flack, as well as Jim Ricci with Victorian Owen Landry will be confident with two wins and very solid margins in hand.

More action tomorrow…

Frankland River’s Serge Ansquer plays his semi-final in the Vision Impaired Singles at 9.45am Perth time.  He faces a tough clash with Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Jake Fehlberg in a bid to make the final.

Women’s Pairs returns to the greens tomorrow, with three WA linked duos still remaining in the final 64.  Kerry Reagan and Sally Wilke combine to take on NSW’s Mei Wan Lam and Maelene Reynolds, whilst Catherine Chappelle and Cathie Smith meet two of the young stars of the sport in Sophie Kurzmann (VIC) and Kate Argent-Bowden (SA).

Kristina Krstic and Ellen Ryan face an interesting match-up with two time Australian Open champion Emma Spicer, teaming with Australian Emerging Jackaroo Brianna Smith.

More action in the Over 60s Men’s Pairs, as the remaining sections complete their opening rounds, and in the Women’s Over 60s Pairs – both events with plenty of WA interest still to watch.
