FRIDAY UPDATE – 2023 National Bowling Arm Sides Championships

by Denise McMillan on September 5, 2023

FRIDAY 8/9 UPDATE: WA picked up on Wednesday when the event was transferred to the indoor green – winning the Tasmania Shield with 24 points to 12. Unfortunately that was our one great day! Thursday’s competition between Victoria and WA was not quite a wash out – we had a win in the Triples (skipper Gary Giblett [Bunbury] with team of Bianca Taylor [Kardinya] and John Lysaght [Halls Head])and Fours (skipper once again Gary Giblett with team of Richard Young [Halls Head], Kim Ward {Binningup] and John Lysaght) and a draw in the Pairs (Bill Taylor and Kim Ward).

Moving onto today, the final day of this tournament, WA is playing against Queensland – again with mixed results. Despite our enthusiastic players in Singles and Fours we have won one singles game 16 to 12 by Bill Taylor. Currently underway is the Pairs which will be followed by the Triples.

WEDNESDAY 6/9 UPDATE: All up WA did not have a great Tuesday winning only 4 points compared to NSW’s 31 points – finishing the day at the bottom of the ladder with 22 points, 8 points below Queensland. Warwick Glenister (Geraldton) won his singles 21 to 15 against NSW Brian Morton while the fours team skipped by Jamie Parker drew with the fours team skipped by NSWs Ian Mann at 10 points.

Inclement weather has forced the nationals inside to the 8 rink green. Early indications show this may be a boon for WA who won 2 of 3 Singles during the first round with both Eddie Gollan (Thornlie) and Bill Taylor (Safety Bay) winning their respective games 21 to 12 against Tasmania while Warwick Glenister struggled to find his line and weight until later in the game going down a very close 16 to 18. Next up is the fours.

WA continues to improve their aggregate score, winning two of the three games of fours. Graham Nottle (Port Bouvard) skipped his team to a one point victory over Tasmania’s Bill Motorshead while Gary Giblett (Bunbury) skipped his rink to a six point win over Tasmania’s Peter Thow.

Devonport Bowling Club, located in Spreyton Tasmania, is the host venue for the 2023 National Bowling Arm Sides Championships. Practice commenced on Sunday 3 September and the Opening Ceremony on Monday showcased each state marching towards the games full of determination and comradeship!

The weather … what can I say other than VERY COLD! Spectators are bundled up and players are layered up! The greens are running between 10 and 12 seconds creating a challenging environment for all.

WA’s first day of play against South Australia did not go our way – equal points and only three shots in the aggregate of for and against. A disappointing start despite valiant efforts of our players.

Now into the second day WA’s opponents are the Woomera’s from New South Whales. Currently Singles and Fours are under way with varied results across the green. Pairs and Triples will commence in the afternoon to finish up the day.
